Roy Lee was a present of sorts,
born on Christmas day, 1941 in Coalwood, West Virginia.
His father worked all of his adult life in
the coal mine at Coalwood. He died at the age of 45, when Roy was only
13 years old. Roy's mother went to work in the school lunchroom to
support the two of them.
He attended Coalwood School through ninth
grade, then finished school at Big Creek High. He was involved in track
and football at both schools.
Roy Lee was active in a variety of clubs,
sports, and of course the Big Creek Missle Association. As an actor, he
was named Best Thespian his senior year.
Two days after graduating from Big Creek,
Roy Lee married Judy Ray, a high school cheerleader. They had a son
named Eric. Shortly afterward they moved to Washington D.C. where, while
working in the banking industry, he attended the University of Maryland
majoring in Business Administration. He also Graduated from the American
Institute of Banking in Washington, D.C. His Banking career took him to
many parts of the world. He retired from banking in 1987.
For the last 13 years he has been married to
his wife Betty, who between them have three grown children, a step son,
and six grandchildren. Presently they reside in Irmo, South Carolina
where Roy Lee is the President of Carolina Domestic Coal, Inc., and has
business and civic interests in Appalachia.
